App Limits
You can set daily limits for app categories with App Limits. For example, you might want to see Productivity apps while you’re at work, but not Social Networking or Games. App Limits refresh every day at midnight, and you can delete them any time. (excerpt from Apple Support Site)
App Limits has obvious benefits for restricting the amount of time spent using both a category of apps like social networking or games and specific apps like Fantasy Football. You can even customize the schedule for the week. Let’s take Fantasy Football as an example. A customized schedule for this app could reflect when games happen and when it may distract from school work:
Customized the weekly schedule:
20 minutes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday,
40 minutes on Monday and Thursday
3 hours on Sunday
One way to get buy in from your student(s) would be to build the customized schedule together. This conversation would allow us to reflect on:
- How much time do we need for homework?
- What others events are going each night? Should we reduce the amount of time on nights when we have soccer practice?
- How much time do we need to get hangout? Do things together?
