Downtime

Downtime (excerpt from Apple Support Site)
Think of this as a nap for your screen time. When you schedule Downtime in Settings, only phone calls and apps that you choose to allow are available. Downtime applies to all of your Screen Time-enabled devices, and you get a reminder five minutes before it starts.

Below is a brief video explaining how to setup Downtime if needed.

Downtime is not just for taking a break from all apps. You could use downtime to wind things down in the evening. For example,  if you set Downtime to start at 7:00 pm with the expectation that your student is headed to bed at 9:00 pm (I know, I know… this may be an unreal bedtime for some of our students) and you set Google Docs, Google Classroom, and iBooks as apps allowed during Downtime then these are the only apps your students can use during the last two hours before bed. It is worth noting that you could override Downtime using the passcode if needed. Having your student ask you to bypass Downtime could be a great prompt or conversation starter.

  • What does this app do? How will it help you complete the assignment?
  • Do you use this app frequently?
  • Which class uses this app? Why?
